Estate Bottled Reserve | Red Mountain
- Vineyards: 58% Heart of the Hill, 42% Kiona Estate
- Composition: 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Carmenère
The world’s finest wines are all a reflection of the areas from which they are grown. Origin and geography matter most when dictating what a finished bottle tastes like. More than winemakers, more than varietals, more than yeast or barrel or blending variables; wines taste like their place.
With that in mind (and because we are extremely well-positioned to build such a wine) we have put together a geographically-designated flagship product. This is the definitive wine of our vineyards, of our viticulture, of our plantings on Red Mountain.
So please enjoy this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant flagship blend. It’s the answer to the question, “What’s so special about Red Mountain?”

Estate Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyards: 70% Kiona Estate, 30% Heart of the Hill
- Composition: 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot
Cabernet Sauvignon is king on Red Mountain. From the humble beginnings of our pioneering 1975 planting to today, we’ve grown cabernet sauvignon on Red Mountain longer than anyone. This wine is a culmination of our multigenerational tradition. The backbone of the wine is cabernet sauvignon from our Kiona Estate Vineyard North Block, a stalwart contributor for quality Red Mountain cabernet sauvignon for decades.
This authoritative wine shows why Red Mountain has a reputation as a powerhouse Cabernet Sauvignon producer capable of going toe-to-toe with the world’s best. Fine grain tannin, great fruit, and dark color abound. High-end components from our esteemed Heart of the Hill estate vineyard add depth, complexity, and layered intrigue.

Estate Red Mountain Merlot
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyards: 62% Kiona Estate, 38% Heart of the Hill
- Composition: 79% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon
The Kiona Estate vineyard is the oldest on Red Mountain. We have 4 distinct blocks of Merlot here; the first was planted in 1976, the youngest in 1995. While these components obviously have much more in common than not, they continue to surprise us even after several decades of experience. All four blocks are included in the 2016 blend, along with a younger Heart of the Hill planting that has garnered a lot of attention in a short period of time.
Merlot from Red Mountain is special; here it's a powerful yet elegant grape, capable of producing wines of profound depth and density of character. A gentle oak regimen that employs primarily 2nd-fill barrels ensures abundant fruit and geographical specificity are preserved in the finished wine.

Red Mountain Syrah
Red Mountain
- Vineyard: 100% Emory Vineyard
- Composition 100% Syrah
Emory vineyard is almost entirely planted in Syrah, and is located very close to our own Syrah planting at the estate Ranch at the End of the Road vineyard. Although we do not own Emory vineyard, we are contracted to farm it and take all of the fruit. It’s located high on the hill, resulting in superior air/water drainage and heat accumulation.
Syrah from Red Mountain is prized for producing wines of profound concentration, color, and character. Our family has farmed Syrah on this dusty slope for more than 20 years, and we are continually impressed at its depth and versatility. A remarkable wine.

Estate Red Mountain Sangiovese
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyards: 67% Kiona Estate, 33% Ranch at the End of the Road
- Composition: 100% Sangiovese
We grow Sangiovese at both the Kiona Estate vineyard (2 acres) and the Ranch at the End of the Road vineyard (3.5 acres) on Red Mountain. Although not planted in large quantities in our area, it excels nonetheless. Big diurnal temperature swings and lots of heat accumulation amount to ripe fruit with ample, well-balanced acidity.
Sangiovese is an extremely versatile grape that has near universal appeal for red wine drinkers. On Red Mountain, the wines are racy and bright, with vibrant red fruit and trademark minerality. Its ample acidity makes it a food-pairing superstar, able to complement a wide array of cuisines from around the world.

Estate Red Mountain Lemberger
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyards: 94% Kiona Estate, 6% Heart of the Hill
- Composition: 94% Lemberger, 3% Carmenère, 2% Petite Sirah, 1% Mourvèdre
Kiona Vineyards and Winery produced the first commercial bottling of Lemberger in the United States in 1980. Since then, our original 1.8 acre planting has grown to 13.1acres. Lemberger is typically grown in cooler regions; Red Mountain is a blast furnace by comparison, which means ours is stouter and darker than most.
For more than four decades Lemberger has been an important part of our family’s
tradition on Red Mountain. The grape thrives here, producing medium-bodied,
fruit-driven wines that pair well with a wide array of foods. It’s an uncommon grape
that’s worthy of attention. -

Estate Red Mountain Riesling
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyards: 100% Red Mountain
- Composition: 100% Riesling
- Residual Sugar: 11 g/L
While Red Mountain is known for big, powerful red wine, it’s also an exceedingly good place to grow white varietals. This fan-trained, old-vine Riesling block (planted 1975-76) is amongst the oldest in the AVA. We believe it is the only Riesling planted on Red Mountain; its wines have delighted us for four decades.
The Riesling planted at our Kiona Estate vineyard produces wines with well-developed bright fruit characteristic and pronounced minerality, both of which are representative of Red Mountain fruit in general. We emphasize acidity over sugar when making picking decisions, a philosophy that ensures the wines are crisp, clean, and well-balanced.

Estate Red Mountain Chenin Blanc Ice Wine
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyard: 100% Kiona Estate
- Composition: 100% Chenin Blanc
- Residual Sugar: 195 g/L
While Red Mountain is known for big, powerful red wine, it’s also an exceedingly good place to grow white varietals. The Kiona Estate vineyard has 4 acres of Chenin Blanc planted in a depression, ensuring a consistent freeze year-in, year-out. We don’t pick Ice Wine until the grapes are naturally frozen in the vineyard (at least 17 ̊F for 8 hours).
Ice Wine is one of the world’s most elusive and delicious elixirs. We prefer to use Chenin Blanc, a varietal that allows for robust acidity and intense green and tropical fruit avors. Our philosophy with this wine is to emphasize acidity over outright sweetness, a tactic that ensures we produce a balanced, crisp wine that dances on the tongue.

Columbia Valley Chenin Blanc
Columbia Valley
- Vineyards: 89.6% Andrews, 10.4% Kiona Estate
- Composition: 100% Chenin Blanc
- Residual Sugar: 12.5 g/L
Chenin Blanc grows exceptionally well in the Columbia Valley, where big temperature swings and ample sunlight ensure nice ripening and vibrant acidity. Strong demand and limited old-vine acreage keep Chenin Blanc in the hands of only a few top-notch producers, Kiona Vineyards and Winery included. One of our favorite grapes.
With trademark bright, crisp, fruit-forward characteristic and immense food-pairability, our Chenin Blanc is a definite crowd-pleaser. We pick fairly early to preserve acidity and lock in delightful green fruit characteristic. 100% stainless cold ferment suits this style well, resulting in a slight frizzante on the crisp off-dry finish. Since our inaugural 1980 vintage, Chenin Blanc has been a stalwart in our portfolio.

Columbia Valley Chardonnay
Columbia Valley
- Vineyard 100% McNary
- Composition 100% Chardonnay
The 2017 Columbia Valley Chardonnay hails from the legendary NcNary Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills, a sub-region of the greater Columbia Valley AVA. The area produces wines with a high degree of varietal typicity, paired with vibrant acidity and balance.
Chardonnay has been a part of our tradition dating back to 1975. The grape thrives in Washington, where the wines are nuanced and layered with a high drinkability. This 2017 version showcases vibrant green pear flavors buoyed by flavors and aromas of fresh cut hay. It's a crowd-pleasing wine that's equally at home with a food pairing as it is all by itself.

Columbia Valley Riesling
Columbia Valley
- Vineyards 65% Vista, 23% Holten, 9% Kiona Estate, 3% Ranch at the End of the Road
- Composition 97% Riesling, 3% Gewürztraminer
- Residual Sugar 14.4 g/L
The greater Columbia Valley is a fantastic place to grow Riesling. Our Vista vineyard forms the backbone of this blend, with big temperature swings and ample sunlight ensuring nice ripening and vibrant acidity. The Kiona Estate vineyard component hails from the oldest vines on Red Mountain, planted in 1975.
Crisp, clean and refreshing, this Riesling showcases the bright acidity and tremendous fresh fruit characteristic that has helped Washington establish a reputation as a world-class producer of the varietal. A small Gewürztraminer addition adds depth, sweetness, aromatics, and intrigue. We cold-ferment to preserve fruit flavors and capture a small amount of frizzante in every bottle

Columbia Valley Late Harvest Riesling
Columbia Valley
- Vineyard 100% Holten
- Composition 100% Riesling
- Residual Sugar 94 g/L
Acid balance is imperative when crafting world-class late harvest wine, and we've found that the riesling from Holten vineyard is ideally suited for that requisite trait. It's got the ideal exposure, precipitation levels, and diurnal shift to produce the delicious, well-balanced dessert wine we have earned a reputation for.
Picked far into the growing season, this Late Harvest Riesling had plenty of time to develop exceptional flavor complexity and high sugar levels. The wine is cold-fermented to preserve fresh-fruit flavors and accentuate the site's vibrant acidity while capturing a small amount of frizzante in every bottle.

Estate Red Mountain Old Block Cabernet Sauvignon
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyard: 100% Kiona Estate
- Composition: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
To celebrate the brash decision these two pioneers of Washington wine made 40 years ago, we have put together a release that tells this story. Four decades of tradition can be found in this wine.
Our Old Block Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is exactly what it sounds like; Cabernet Sauvignon from that original 1975 planting, the one that started it all. As vines mature, they tend to produce softer, more elegant wines with smooth, velvety tannins and nuanced flavors. Typically this material would find its way into either our Estate Red Mountain Reserve and/or Cabernet Sauvignon blends, but we decided to keep 11 barrels from the stellar 2014 vintage separate for this limited bottling.

Estate Red Mountain Pioneer Red
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyards: 50% Heart of the Hill, 26% Kiona Estate, 24% Ranch at the End of the Road
- Composition: 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Sangiovese, 26% Mourvèdre, 11% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah
My Grandparents John and Ann Williams planted the first vineyard (our very own Kiona Estate vineyard) on Red Mountain together in 1975. This wine honors their story.
From the beginning we knew we wanted to blend the wine vertically, which is why you’ll notice there is no vintage on the label. Some of the more intriguing wines we have released over the last few years have been vertical blends, and we wanted to explore that further. Instead of a vintage, these wines will carry version numbers. This is Version II.
Estate Red Mountain Pioneer Red Version II contains components from several vintages. Most wines in the world are blended horizontally, which is to say the components all come from the same vintage. This is, in my opinion, largely done because of tradition and historical precedent. But beyond that, blending within a vintage is largely an artificial constraint. I would go so far as to say that when you are emphasizing PLACE, which is what we are doing here, vertical blending allows you to blend a wine that tells a more complete story.

Estate Red Mountain Malbec
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyard: 100% Heart of the Hill
- Composition: 100% Malbec
We have just 2.55 acres of Malbec planted at our estate Heart of the Hill vineyard on Red Mountain. The varietal thrives here, producing wines of uncommon depth and complexity, usually with a softer, rounder profile than many of its Bordeaux-varietal cousins. Although not grown in sufficient quantities for a wider release, we have found that keeping a few top-notch barrels for the tasting room and wine club is a popular decision.
Malbec has recently been “discovered” by the wine-drinking public as a superb stand-alone grape for fruit-forward, dark, approachable wines with lots of depth. This certainly holds true on Red Mountain, where plantings are relatively young but already exhibiting a lot of character.

Estate Red Mountain Gewürztraminer
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyards: 100% Ranch at the End of the Road
- Composition: 100% Gewürtztraminer
- Residual Sugar: 23.6 g/L
We are the first to admit that Gewürztraminer is an oddity for Red Mountain. But you can’t argue with the results! The majority of this block was planted in 1978, making it one of the oldest on Red Mountain. Its location at Ranch at the End of the Road vineyard is one the highest in elevation in the AVA, resulting in great exposure and excellent air drainage.
Getting nerdy is what we do best, and this wine certainly qualifies. Every year this block surprises us. Sometimes it’s great for off-dry wine. Sometimes it’s great for sweet late harvest. In 2016, the sweet spot was somewhere in the off-dry category, as the wine exhibits tremendous sugar/acid balance; it's a touch drier than the prior version (2014). It’s got super-awesome varietal typicity married with trademark Red Mountain flavor density and minerality. Niche of a niche, and ever-so-tasty.

Estate Red Mountain Fortunate Sun Late Harvest Chenin Blanc
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyard: 100% Kiona Estate
- Composition: 100% Chenin Blanc
- Residual Sugar: 216 g/L
We have made Ice Wine for more than 30 years. But the margin we have to work with each year is becoming narrower due to climate change. That’s why we have (for several years) been R&Ding an alternative way to arrive at a similar end result: super-concentrated Chenin Blanc juice that we can ferment into premium dessert wine.
This is the same Chenin Blanc block in the same Kiona Estate vineyard that we use for the Ice Wine. The difference is that we adjust the canopy on the west side of the row so as to maximize exposure to the late fall afternoon sun. This process effectively raisins the grapes on the vine, resulting in the removal of water and the concentration of sugar and flavor components.
The goal was a 1-1 quality peer with the Ice Wine, Fortunate Sun certainly is that. It's a spectacular wine and we are excited to offer it as a companion to Ice Wine. It’s actually about 4% sweeter than the 2014 Ice Wine was, so it’s certainly no slouch. It was picked 1 to 2 months before we typically pick Ice Wine, but yields were very similar.
